HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR NATURAL HAIR...Learn the simplest way to care for your natural hair to give it that shine you've always wanted.

Good day naturalists.

Are you currently thinking of how to care for your natural hair in order to have a fuller and healthy hair? Well then, this is for you.

Firstly, do you know that you don’t have to plait your hair for it to grow...you don’t have to do long term protective styles... you don’t have to use onion juice or rice water?...I’m not saying all these are bad, but understand that they’re not necessary for everyone. Also understand that you may have originally learned how to care for your hair in a poor way, I know I did. I know that I used to think that our hair doesn’t like moisture, that only mixed women can have long hair, and that caring for natural hair was hard. You eventually learn that the way you’ve been taught is wrong. And while it’s hard to relearn everything, the outcome is worth it!!

Kindly follow the steps below:

1. What is your regimen?: One thing that is missing in some naturalists hair growth journey is a lack of regimen. When I mean regimen, I simply mean you should have a list of things you do to your hair regularly and this list should be constant. The most important and basic things you should do to your hair as someone with natural hair are to moisturize, protective style, deep condition regularly and sleep with your hair covered. Once you've developed a good regimen, your hair is on the road to being healthy. Notice that without a good regimen, even things that other naturalists swear by like castor oil or rice water might not be able to help you.

2. Know your hair porosity: Many naturalists, including myself, will say that knowing their hair porosity was the most important knowledge they ever attained for their journey. Hair porosity, though a boring subject to explain, will help you a lot in your hair journey. It is also genetically determined. Scientifically, it can be defined as the ability of your hair to retain moisture. If you have low porosity hair, it would be difficult for moisture to enter the cuticles of your hair but once it enters, it also retains it for a long period of time. High porosity hair easily obtains moisture but looses it just as quickly. If your hair gets dry quickly after moisturizing, you probably have high porosity hair, but if your hair always takes long to dry, you have low porosity. Medium porosity falls between the two. Once you know your porosity, you'll know what products work for you. For example, rice water, although beneficial, can cause a lot of damage to low porosity hair due to protein overload, but high porosity hair girls can use it without consequences.

3. Have you trimmed your hair lately?: Sometimes, it isn't about anything other than bad ends. As a naturalist, it is important to trim your hair a few times each year. When you're experiencing stagnancy, you might want to trim your ends, because bad ends might be the ones causing more breakage than usual.

4. Protective styling: After you've done all the above steps, please put your hair in a long term protective style for about a month or two. The reason this step is very important is because it keeps your hair away from your body. Putting it in a protective style till it's past shoulder length will help.

5. Set a goal: This is also very important. After following all the steps above, you should also measure your present growth and set a goal for what length you want your hair to be like in 6 months or thereabouts. This will enable you to know if your hair regimen is working or there is a product you should change.

I hope this helped.

Thank you for reading.
