HOW TO TAKE CARE OF LOW POROSITY HAIR

Hi Beauty!

Have you ever set your hair in twists or rollers only to wake up and find out that your hair is still super wet? You may very well have low porosity hair. Low porosity hair can take hours to dry. When you have low porosity hair you will have issues absorbing moisture so it ends up just sitting on top of your hair. The good news is that once low porosity hair absorbs moisture it’s in there to stay.

Low porosity hair has tightly sealed cuticles making it difficult for water to even penetrate the hair. It's also prone to build-up since products cannot penetrate the hair shaft. To effectively care for low-porosity hair, check out the tips below.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF LOW POROSITY HAIR:

1. Limit Protein, Silicones, Heavy Oils and Butters: Because low-porosity hair is prone to build-up, you'll want to avoid all this protein, silicones, heavy oils and butters. Make sure you read the label before purchasing a product to ensure that its free of these ingredients, or at least has them farther down the ingredient list.

2. Use a Clarifying Shampoo: This may sound counterproductive when it comes to caring for natural hair, but if you're low porosity, a clarifying shampoo can really help the hair to be moisturized more effectively. It doesn't need to be used every wash day, but when it becomes difficult to moisturize hair, despite following the other tips, it's time to clarify.

3. Use Warm Water to Wash Hair: Heat helps to open up the hair cuticle making it possible for moisture to enter the hair shaft. When washing the hair, use warm water to help remove build-up that may be on or in the hair shaft.

4. Use a Steamer and Heating cap: To effectively moisturize low-porosity hair, you'll need to open up the hair cuticle. Adding heat to the equation opens up your pores so the necessary moisture will seep inside. Low porosity hair works great when heat is used; it helps with opening up your hairs tightly closed pores. For example, a hair steamer, shower, or a heated hair wrap can help open up your hair pores to receive necessary moisture.

It’s been well documented that using a hair steamer on your hair once or twice a month can make a huge difference in the condition of your hair. If you don’t have one simply make sure you trap in enough heat using your plastic caps or towels. I usually advocate using up to 3 or more plastic caps in deep conditioning low porosity hair. You can also accomplish this by using a steamer, or spraying hair with water, and warming hair with a heating cap for 20 minutes before moisturizing and sealing.

5. Use Light, Water-Based Moisturizers and Oils: Because low-porosity hair is prone to build-up, lighter moisturizers and oils are good for the hair.

6. Deep Condition with Heat: If there's one tip that works for both high porosity and low porosity hair, it's deep conditioning hair with heat. But if you're low porosity, just make sure the hair is clean so that the deep conditioner can penetrate the hair shaft.

There are many good natural products to use on low porosity hair. For oils-
1. Castor oil
2. Sunflower oil
3. Grapeseed oil
4. Argan oil
5. Jojoba oil
6. Apricot oil
7. Sweet almond oil
